Is there a problem with your vehicle’s Kentucky title? Was it misplaced, damaged, or stolen? If so, you should apply for a duplicate Kentucky title through Kentucky’s Division of Motor Vehicles.

If you ever intend to transfer ownership of your vehicle, having the title in order is important. This is the legal document that proves you own the vehicle. You can’t sell it, donate it, or complete your vehicle registration or renewals without it, so keep it safe!

What will I need to get a duplicate title in Kentucky?

To obtain a replacement title in Kentucky, you must gather all of the necessary information and documents, which include the following:

  • A Completed Application for Kentucky Certificate of Title or Registration (Form TC 96-182)
    • Make sure to fill out the Vehicle Identification and Owner Sections
    • The form MUST be notarized. If you are having it notarized at the County Clerk’s office, you will need to bring identification.
  • The Vehicle’s Year, Make & Model
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and/or Kentucky Title Number and/or License Plate Number
  • Odometer Disclosure
  • Vehicle Registration (for Proof of Ownership)
  • Acceptable Identification (such as a Driver’s License or an ID Card)
  • Name, Social Security Number and Address
  • $8.00 Duplicate Title Fee, plus the Notary Cost
    • The county clerk’s office will also notarize documents for you for an additional $2 fee.

NOTE: If you have moved out of state, you must contact your County Clerk to provide your new, out-of-state address.

If you are new to the state of Kentucky, you must also provide the following:

  • Valid Proof of Insurance that meets Kentucky’s Minimum Requirements
  • A Signed-over Title with a Notarized Signature (or your Registration and Bill of Sale if it’s all you have)
    • The name on the title and the name on your photo ID must match. If you’ve changed your name, bring legal documentation, such as a marriage certificate or divorce papers.

What if there is a lien on the vehicle when I apply for a duplicate Kentucky Title?

If your vehicle has a lien at the time of application, this information must be entered into the appropriate fields on the Application for Kentucky Certificate of Title or Registration (Form TC 96-182) form.
